This morning I'm cruising to work, as thrilled and as energized as any other morning (ie. 99% not focused on work) and I see a couple kids (I'm 36, this means they were 16-17) running back and forth across the road. As I'm traveling further I see one kid on each side of the road crouched down. As I get closer they suddenly stand up and look like they are holding a rope across the road.

My natural reaction was to hit the brakes. As I did, I look to the right and see another kid with a video camera taping the whole thing. I came to a complete stop and they were just laughing and laughing.

So I smiled for the video camera, held up my cell phone, and dialed 911.

I then pulled into the parking lot behind where they parked their cars, gave the dispatcher their license plates numbers, and waited for the cop. Suddenly it wasn't as funny ...

The kids wanted to talk to me. I just kept moving my car. What I would have said would not have been good.

I stayed on the line with the dispatcher, telling her how badly they had startled me, how dangerous this could have been, and she said I was the 4th call but the only one who'd stayed on the line with them.

I didn't have to give a statement, although I would have, but I hope those kids know how much their little stunt freaked people out. All I could think is that I was going to end up hurting them and frankly in the moment it terrified me. As soon as I realized it was a practical joke and how funny they thought it was, I wanted to hurt them!

Screwing around on a road that is full of commuters is not bright. Screwing around with someone who hasn't had enough coffee and sunlight yet is even stupider.

I'll have to check the paper & see if it makes the police beat. I don't know if they got warnings or tickets, but each kid was handed something by the cop.

They didn't have the camera rolling then ... too bad ... I'm sure the look on their faces were much funnier than all of us they pranked. At least I went away laughing!
